Abstract:
Combining the masked priming lexical decision task and event-related potentials(ERPs)technology, this study explored the flexibility of orthographic coding during English word reading in Chinese-English bilinguals.Twenty-two intermediate-high proficiency Chinese-English bilinguals participated in this experiment. Results showed that Chinese-English bilinguals exhibited a significant backward priming effect when reading English words, and this effect was found for both high and intermediate English proficiency groups.More importantly,in the ERP results, the backward priming condition elicited more negative N400 amplitude than the unrelated priming condition. This indicates that Chinese-English bilinguals also have a highly flexible position coding system during English word reading, and this effect is generated from semantic processing. The results support that L1 characteristics influence L2 processing, and L1 lexical processing patterns transfer to L2 lexical processing.
