Abstract:

 Previous studies have usedconditional reasoning tasks and possibility judgment tasks to investigate the meanings of conditionals.People¡¯s responses in these two tasks can reflect their readings of the semantic relationship between clauses in a conditional.Current research investigated whether type of materials influence the semantic reading of necessary conditionals(Only if p,q).The results are as follows.For the abstract necessary conditionals(ANC,e.g.,Only if the card is green,it is square.),most participants affirmed q from affirming p,and denied q from denying p in the conditional reasoning task,and judged cases pq and þ†SymbolXC@ p þ†SymbolXC@ q as possible in the possibility judgment task.For the concrete necessary conditionals(CNC,e.g.,Only if a man took the civil service exam,he is a civil servant.),most participants denied q from denying p,but didn¡¯t affirm q from affirming p in the conditional reasoning task,and judged pq,p þ†SymbolXC@ q,and þ†SymbolXC@ p þ†SymbolXC@ q as possible in the possibility judgment task.In each task,most participants interpreted ANCs as p being necessary and sufficient for q,but interpreted CNCs as p being necessary but not sufficient for q.This study found that type of materials affected the reading of necessary conditionals.The semantics of necessary conditionals are relative,depending on type of materials.Abstract necessary conditionals generally mean p being both necessary and sufficient for q,whereas concrete necessary conditionals generally mean p being necessary but not sufficient for q.This supports the author¡¯s proposed semantic relativity account over alternative explanations.
